Salzburg - the City of Culture
The provincial capital of the SalzburgerLand looks back on a glorious history. Salzburg is perhaps most renowned for its famous son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart first saw the light of day here back in 1756.
The Salzburg Festival, which is held here annually during the summer, keeps this city’s cultural heritage very much alive and well.
Krimmel Waterfalls
Visitors to Krimml can gaze in awe upon the highest waterfalls in Europe. In 3 separate tiers, the water drops a total of 380 metres to the base below. The sight of Europe’s highest falls – also, incidentally, the fifth-highest in the entire world – is a very special spectacle.
One highlight is the WasserWunderWelt, where adults and children can learn all there is to know about water-related topics.
Giant Ice Caves in Werfen
The “World of Ice Giants” in Werfen is an enormous cave system inside Salzburg’s Tennengebirge mountains. By frosty temperatures, you will be able to gaze in awe at mighty ice sculptures whose creators were not artists, but rather Mother Nature herself. These caves were only discovered at the beginning of the last century.
Grossglockner and the High-Alpine Road
The Grossglockner is Austria’s highest mountain, reaching a height of 3798 metres. It forms the border between the Austrian provinces of Salzburg, Eastern Tyrol and Carinthia, representing a very important part of the Hohe Tauern National Park. On July 28, 1800, the summit of the Grossglockner was first conquered. Martin and Sepp Klotz, together with Pastor Horasch, have generally been regarded ever since as the first to climb this peak.
The Grossglockner High-Alpine Road is far more than merely a mountain pass. It is a myth in its own right. Opened in 1935, it is a masterpiece of road construction, a unique scenic road wending its way up the mountain through numerous switchbacks until reaching the Franz-Josefs-Höhe (elev. 2,369 m), where you are rewarded with views of the Pasterze glacier and the Grossglockner. And the drive up Austria’s tallest peak will take you through a natural world which is truly breathtaking.
Kaprun High-Mountain Reservoirs
Austria is famous for drawing most of its energy from renewable resources. Perhaps the most impressive example of this are the Kaprun High-Mountain Reservoirs. They are a masterpiece of technology, nestled amid the breath-taking scenery of the highest mountains in Austria. When you visit the Kaprun reservoirs, you will find yourself in a landscape of alpine pastures, mountains and glaciers.
Open Air Museum Grossgmain
As you pass through the spacious museum area, you will discover a great variety of building and living methods and styles in rural culture and become acquainted with interesting details of peasant life in former times. You can watch many craftsmen at work on Sundays and public holidays.
Hohenwerfen Fortress
The rich archbishops of Salzburg once ordered the construction of this noble castle in Werfen, in order to provide for the timely defence of Salzburg City, their seat of government and site of their palatial residences.
A special attraction: Bird-of-prey shows at the State Falconer’s.
Saalachtal Natural Wonders
In 1831, wood cutters constructed a trail through the 600 metres-long Seisenberg Gorge in order to transport timber.
The Lower Kaser Gorge was first made accessible to visitors in 1882. It is 400 metres in length and measures just 80 cm at its narrowest point.
Lamprecht’s Cave extends out for some 51 kilometres, making it one of the largest cave systems anywhere in Europe. The cave is currently thought to be the world’s longest multi-entrance cave
